Remembering David Cook - Deacon 001
David gave the Club our name. He used to organize trips to Sturgis each year, and he would take over the entire Bullock Hotel in Deadwood before it had even been renovated. A bunch of his crew was walking up the street in Deadwood one afternoon, and he said “There are so many of us up here that they should call us the Deacons of Deadwood.” When his son Ricky co-founded the Club a few years after David’s death from pancreatic cancer, it adopted the name Deacons of Deadwood after David’s remark.
David was a bigger-than-life personality, and there are too many stories to relate here. Many Club Members believe that his ideals were the foundation upon which the Deacons of Deadwood was founded. While that is not exactly true when given the choice of printing the truth or the legend, it’s better to go with the legend, so who are we to cast any doubt on David’s influence on the Deacons of Deadwood.
