Remembering Duke Nunn – Deacon 019

Dukenunn.jpg

Duke joined the Deacons during its first year. He was a roofer by trade.

Duke used to like to go to Big John’s Ice House on Sunday mornings and work the New York Times crossword puzzle. If you peeked over his shoulder you could see that at least half the words he had filled in were wrong.

Duke was proud to be a Deacon. He didn’t have two nickels to rub together, but he paid his dues on time every month. He was a good example of some real dead beats the Club had in those days.

Duke was drinking one Sunday morning and had a high-speed wreck on his bike. He sustained a severe head injury and needed help from others for the rest of his life. He would be at Club functions now and then or we might run into him on occasion, and he always mustered a smile for his brothers. It’s a bit of an indictment on the Club that we did not keep up with him better than we did.
